The Greatest Miracle of All

A couple weeks ago, I was at the gym with some friends when a discussion arose about some of the stories in the Bible. Of particular contention was the story of Jonah and his three days inside the big fish. It quickly became apparent my friends in question did NOT believe the event ever happened. “It’s an allegory,” claimed one.  “No way,” said another. In mere seconds we were rolling around on the floor in a fit of violence, attempting to rip off each other’s limbs and choke each other unconscious.

Rest

It’s 6:00 PM, and it’s quiet—quieter than it ever is in the “real” world.  I’m sitting beside a fire at 11,000 feet watching the sunset over a pristine mountain lake.  To my knowledge the closest human being is at least nine miles away.  It’s fall and there is a chill in the air that makes the fire both necessary and comforting.  The crackle of flames and the wind in the aspens are my companions.  A fresh cup of coffee warms my fingers as I watch the occasional trout rise on the lake. 
 
                  And God is here.

Children of the Lord Most High

As most of you know, this past October, Amanda and I spent two nights in the Pediatric ICU and three nights in the Infant Medical Unit at Primary Children’s Hospital when our youngest, Akia had a grand mal seizure that could not be stopped. This was the second time Akia had been taken via life-flight to a children’s hospital (the first being in Tacoma, WA on Memorial Day) for uncontrollable, life threatening, seizures.
